Copper Penny is a 56 foot catamaran with an amazing width of 31 feet giving stability and quality sailing. Lagoon pioneered the addition of the “fly bridge” which gives the yacht another level of space for guests to enjoy while sailing and at anchor. This area is completely covered with shade. There is also forward couch seating near the bow of the yacht to relax while sailing. Each of the 3 queen cabins have ensuite showers and dry heads. The master cabins offers it’s own entrance on the stern of the yacht. Captain Jim and chef Amanda met when they were whitewater raft guides in the USA. After buying their own boat and sailing to the Caribbean, they fell in love with the Caribbean and started a successful chartering career. Captain Jim, in addition to his sailing abilities, is a PADI Divemaster. Chef Amanda trained at a mega-yacht cooking school in Fort Lauderdale and is also a PADI Divemaster. Guests can expect a wonderful cruise on Copper Penny with her adoring crew.

After having a few weeks to reflect on our wonderful vacation we are only more positive that it was the most perfect week we have ever spent together as a family! Far from cell phones, TV, and the pressures of life, we were able to completely relax and connect with each other and the amazing locations, flora and fauna of the BVI. Your enthusiasm and obvious love of life on the water was contagious. We learned so much from you and we carried home with us splendid memories! (snorkeling with the myriad fish we now know the names of, finding the cannons, swimming through the tunnel, hanging out with sea turtles, seeing the lurking barracudas, hiking to the pirate lookout, our own private beaches and secluded bays, fancy frosty drinks and amazing appetizers after a riotous afternoon of tubing, wakeboarding and kayaking, star lit gourmet dinners, fabulous desserts, we could go on and on…) Quite often you just read our minds, like when you whisked us from Anegada to Norman Island just to find the perfect sunset.
A vacation of a lifetime – Gord, excellent captain, gracious host, very knowledgeable tour guide, and entertainer. Ginny, extraordinary chef with every meal ***** the taste, presentation and variety for 7 days was so perfect. The stories of their travels and of the BVI were fascinating. Both Gord and Ginny went out of their way to provide sodas, drinks, beers and food choices we indicated. We both enjoyed the snorkeling immensely – the equipment fit perfectly and the sites we visited were great. We loved the tour of Virgin Gorda and the Baths – the Pirate entertainment – Saba Rock Tarpon feeding – sailing around the islands and all the local flavor of the Soggy Dollar and Foxys. I really enjoyed the hike from the Bitter End. Kenny was fascinated to learn about sailing and the boat equipment. I must repeat – “A Vacation Experience of a Lifetime!”
This was the best vacation ever! We have wondered how our trips are ever going to compare to this and we seriously think the only way is to plan another one with your company and Jim and Amanda. We cannot say enough about how wonderful this trip was. This was my husband's and my 5th trip and it surpassed all the others by miles! Thank you for everything.
This was one of the best vacations that we have ever taken. Amanda and Jim were both outstanding. Amanda´s meals were amazing, great variety and Amanda did an amazing job tailoring her menu to our particular dietary needs. She also doubled as a great underwater guide. She came diving and snorkeling with us and was very knowledgeable about all the different species. Jim was a great captain and master of ceremonies. He put together the perfect itinerary and kept us moving with lots of great activities. He was also like a private instructor helping us windsurf, water ski and scuba dive. We got on the boat after a very busy week for our wedding and Jim did the extraordinary step of even getting some laundry done for us! Can't say enough positive things about them both. They are total pros. I really can't think of anything that was missing. The pace and itinerary of our vacation was perfect. After a long hectic week for our wedding, Jim knew and executed the perfect mix of relaxation and activities. We often anchored at out of the way places which afforded great privacy. Jim and Amanda are a great team and we had a lot of fun hanging out with them. Our charter was only 2 people so we obviously had a lot of attention but I bet Amanda and Jim would be an amazing team for larger groups as well. We are already trying to get a group together to charter with them again.
OMG – the meals belonged in a 5 star, top of the line restaurant in the most famous cities in the world! Each day was a complete surprise and there was never a “let-down” in regards to the delicious treats that Amanda prepared. So yummy!!! Can't wait till we have a chance to have Amanda share them with us!
Kent and I had a wonderful time during our week with you. Our memories and adventures will last for many years to come! The food was beyond 5-star Ginny….truly impressed! You both took such good care of us and made sure our every need was met. We had such a good time snorkeling, sailing, paddleboarding and just hanging out!
Jim and Amanda were the ultimate hosts. My luggage didn’t arrive, it became Jim’s problem and a one hour round trip in the rain, in the dingy to pick it up later, was done without a thought to complain. When Kathy’s insulin pump died, (not from a swim in the ocean), again Jim made it his problem, and another trip in the dingy to get insulin without a complaint. Jim made us feel welcome, and made sure we had our every wish fulfilled. The only decisions we really had to make all week were whether to have a Bloody Mary or Mimosa with breakfast or Red or white wine with dinner. The itinerary included all the hot spots we had read about in the travel guides. We visited party coves and experienced the Will T and Soggy Dollar Bar, scenery unparalleled, snorkeling areas that were breathtaking, Natural sites like the Baths, and secluded isolated anchorages. Amanda’s should never be called a cook. She is a five star rated chef. Never in my life have I experienced 7 consecutive days of food that made me say “Oh Wow” at every meal and every course. Salad nicoise with grilled tuna and a killer homemade dressing, or chicken roti for lunch, pina colada pancakes or rum infused french toast for breakfast, grilled Mahi Mahi in an amazing tropical marinade, beef tenderloin for dinner as just a sampling of the menu. And the desserts……….homemade cheesecake, key lime pie, and chocolate birthday cake. They made reservations for us on our one night out for dinner and we had the most amazing lobster dinners in the Caribbean. Not only can I recommend this boat a crew, but I am already plotting a way to spend another week with them. Thank you again for arranging an extraordinary week for me and my family. This is an experience they will never forget.

CAPTAIN JIM & CHEF/FIRST MATE AMANDA (WINTER SEASON)
Jim, your captain, is a Canadian who grew up sailing on Lake Ontario. His family has always owned boats and Jim began his sailing instruction while attending summer camp. As a young adult Jim moved to Virginia, were he became bareboat certified and began chartering. In his corporate life Jim was a stockbroker. He was televised on Charlottesville, Virginia’s NBC29 nightly news for seven years sharing his market commentary with viewers. While working as a stockbroker, Jim found time to become a delivery captain for a Lagoon catamaran dealership, and began transiting the East Coast of North America. There he found his love for the open ocean. He obtained his United States Coast Guard Masters License, and later obtained a MCA 200-ton Offshore Certificate. Jim is also a certified PADI Dive Master, and looks forward to taking you diving. In addition Jim enjoys windsurfing, kite surfing, and skiing.
Amanda, your chef, is from Virginia. She grew up as a competitive swimmer and spent time backpacking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Later, she discovered triathlons, and spent many hours training and competing. Jim introduced her to sailing, and life was never the same. She began sailing the Chesapeake every weekend, and accompanying Jim on some of his deliveries. Amanda’s career as an engineer was demanding and gratifying, but soon she began dreaming of warm waters. During her years sailing the Caribbean, she developed a love for cooking and exploring local cuisine. To prepare for life as a charter chef, Amanda attended a mega-yacht cooking school in Fort Lauderdale, where she honed her skills. She looks forward to serving you beautifully presented delicious meals. In addition, Amanda is a certified PADI DiveMaster, and a kayak instructor. Amanda’s other interests include windsurfing, kite surfing, and skiing.
CAPTAIN JERRY & CHEF/FIRST MATE DAWN (SUMMER SEASON)
Captain Jerry has been sailing since he was 2 years old and has sailed extensively throughout the Northeast USA, and Caribbean and has undertaken several Trans-Atlantic crossings. He holds a 100 ton USCG Masters license and is also a NAUI Scuba Instructor and PADI Divemaster, as well as a US Sailing Instructor.
One of Jerry’s great loves is teaching and as an avid water sports enthusiast he enjoys sharing all his varied knowledge with friends and guests. Jerry teaches lots of SCUBA courses from first time resort courses to full or advanced diving certifications. After residing in the Caribbean Islands for 13 years, Jerry is a good source of local knowledge and history which ensures every trip is unique, fun and interesting. He is gregarious and loves meeting people.
Dawn Mottram is British, coming from North Wales originally. She grew up on the coast and living by the sea she spent many happy hours with her family on boats. She passed her love for sailing onto her two children, who have taken to the sport as well. Dawn has always enjoyed cooking for her family, friends and charitable events. She is a trained RGN nurse, specializing in paediatrics, community, and ophthalmic nursing, and has most recently worked as a medical equipment consultant.
Her career of helping people as a nurse inspired her to start fundraising for causes she believed in. As the years went on, the scale of her fundraising and the distances she went to, grew. Dawn’s passion for the outdoors has led her on cycling tours through Vietnam, hikes up the three highest mountains peaks of Great Britain, and numerous sailing events such as Cowes Week. She has taken part in many long distance offshore sailing races, most notably the Fastnet Race. Her largest fundraiser generated £100,000 for Sail4Cancer. She was involved in forming the first “all female” team to compete in the Non-Stop Around Britain and Ireland Race in 2006. One of her many duties onboard was as bowman and foredeck crew but she was also the cook. Her experiences of cooking on racing boats led Dawn to produce the Swell Food recipe book, for sailing enthusiasts. All proceeds were donated to Sail4Cancer, enabling children suffering from the affects of cancer to have sailing opportunities.
