CAPTAIN RJ & MATE/CHEF JENNA
Captain RJ, originally from Alaska, began sailing many years ago in the Puget Sound, surrounded by mountains and the beautiful city of Seattle. Longing for warmer wind and water (as many of us do), RJ decided to sell his businesses, officially downsize his life and move to St. Thomas to become a sailboat captain. And that is exactly what he did. Not long after moving to the USVI, RJ found himself the co-captain of a fun little day charter boat named, Rumbaba. Though she was a simple little 39ft Hunter monohull; Rumbaba was a blast to take guests out on. Incredible scenery, snorkeling with turtles, delicious grilled lunch entrees and all the fresh cocktails you could handle made each outing something special for every guest. Making the top 10 of all activities to do on St. Thomas and Trip Advisor verified that!
First Mate Jenna grew up on Newman Lake, Washington; a beautiful little lakeside community outside of Spokane. Her love for boating began from a very young age; sitting on her Dad’s lap and racing the speed boat from shore to shore. Jenna’s eventual move to Seattle only gave her more access to playing on sailboats on the Puget Sound. Loving the city, but needing escape, boat camping, or as Jenna would say, “Bamping”, around the many islands and bays of the sound became a frequent weekend event. She could also always be found as steady and faithful crew for the infamous Duck Dodge races of South Lake Union!
The wind and the sea continued to call on RJ too, and he found himself as crew on some pretty slick racing sailboats. Again however, the warmer wind and waters of the Caribbean continued to call; this time, literally…
RJ’s original sailing instructor, from many years earlier in Seattle, was on the other end of that phone call. He had established a sailing school in Grenada and, through social media, had seen that RJ was back in the Puget Sound sailing.
“Have you ever thought about teaching sailing?” he said through the phone. “I think you’d be great at it.” He added.
RJ laughed at first, “Man, I’m still out here learning to sail!”
His response was all RJ needed to hear: “RJ, there is no better way to learn than to teach.”
And with that, the next chapter of sailing began. RJ diligently acquired all the proper certifications through the US Coast Guard and the American Sailing Association and began to teach sailing at Seattle Sailing Club. What a blast! RJ absolutely found a calling. This is also when he met his beautiful wife, Jenna. She was a lighthearted beer can racing sailor when they met and she was fascinated with his plans to live a Caribbean sailing life. He was going and he hoped she would visit, often.
After about 6 months from that first important phone call, RJ moved himself to Grenada. Sight unseen prior to arrival, he immediately fell in love with Grenada and The Grenadines. How can you not? They are the friendliest people in the Caribbean; hands down. And beauty was everywhere! What a place. “Work” was teaching term charter sailing and exploring all the amazing little spots along the way. Oh what fun this job is! Teaching people who are so excited and switched on to learn how to captain a boat for themselves. Many students planned to charter boats with their family and friends, some just wanted to see what it was all about by testing their will (and stomachs) and still others came to learn how to sail off into retirement, literally.
Jenna continued to join the Grenada adventure. At first as an ASA student herself. She kept coming back to join RJ on more adventures and for more sailing. Their combined passion for sailing has only been surpassed by their love for each other. The more they sailed, the more obvious it became that this was to be their wonderful and adventure filled life together. Teaching became a calling for them both and they began to charter private couple’s cruising instruction. Does it get any better than that?! Working with your love and teaching other couples with similar dreams to yours how to make it into a reality! It has been truly amazing. Just ask them and you will get the fully animated version… they don’t tell short stories… Haha, what fun would that be?!
5 years later; RJ married the beautiful Jenna. They’ve sailed over 20,000 nautical miles together. Over 300 ASA students graduated. 2 Outstanding ASA Instructor of the Year awards. 100’s of new friends and lifetimes of memories. Life has been good to say the least.
It’s not always sailing for these two… whenever possible, Jenna and RJ enjoy scuba diving, kiteboarding, hiking and traveling together. Stateside, RJ laces up the skates whenever he can smell an ice rink and Jenna gets all giddy when she can strap on the crampons and climb to the tallest mountain. Family and friends are always in the mix everywhere they go.
So now it is time to make some more new friends and show you all the beauty that the Virgin Islands have to offer.

Captain, you are an outstanding captain. One who is knowledgeable and kind. Chef,
you are far too kind and your mocktails are the best ever!! No, Seriously!! Your smile is
contagious and your hospitality unmatched! Thank you so much for all of your help on
the boat. Thank you for helping us plan our adventures. I hope your upcoming
charter goes well. You are a very kind and compassionate soul. Chef, merci! Your food was amazing. Thank you for accommodating our tricky dietary needs and restrictions. The squash as well as the berries with mint were my favorite! Thank you for making the yacht feel like home. We will see you soon!
We had such a wonderful week, with such excellent hospitality and awesome food! We love hanging out with you guys and getting to know you. We hope to travel again! Keep up the great work!! We always love scuba diving with you all and enjoy your company. Thank you for everything and safe travels in the future!
Thank you for the single best vacation we have ever had. We had previously chartered a
yacht in Turkey, and at the time, thought that experience was incredible. The yacht and your
amazing crew put that experience to shame. We cannot say enough good things about our time with you. The trip itinerary was perfect. Each day was different, interesting, and beautiful. The boat was insane. We loved being bigger and badder than every single other boat in the Caribbean. The food was perfect.Thank you for being so thoughtful in crafting excellent meals for the adults and the kids. The boat toys were also fantastic. Every other boat wanted our Seabobs, and especially the Bruiser! But honestly, nothing was better than this crew. From the crew’s ridiculous depth of knowledge, to a consummate professionalism, to the captain’s mastery of the seas, and finally, to the chef’sexcellent meals and story-telling. You will all be missed!
Thank you so much for the wonderful experience and we know many more to come. The food was amazing, the guided tours made the experience so much greater, our dream of sailing and being in the beautiful Caribbean Islands fulfilled. Our family is very appreciated to your wonderful service, kindness, and training to sail. See you soon. Enjoy the charters until we are back.
We had a fantastic week vacationing on the yacht was awesome...considerate, thoughtful, and fun. We snorkeled, hiked, paddle boarded, kayaked, went scuba diving, sight seeing, sailed and wakeboarded. The chef cooked us amazing meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The chef's food was delicious. The crew made this one of our best family vacations. We can’t wait to come back
The boat was wonderful and very comfortable. The crew could not have been better. About 91 on a scale of 1-10. They were very competent handling the boat. The meals were great, well presented and more than enough. The diving was great. They are great instructors. The itinerary was perfect. Our best vacation ever, by far.
Every moment on this trip was exciting. The views of the BVI were spectacular and breathtaking and we never once felt seasick. This was a dream come true and would recommend it to anyone. We tell all our friends about this trip and can't stop talking about it. On a scale of 1-10, we'd give this trip a solid 10. Our captain and chef were incredible as well, and we left feeling like old friends.
You have been the most gracious hosts. We enjoyed every minute, every meal, and every stage. Thank you so much for everything. We have wonderful memories and we’ll miss you two. The week went by in a blur, your have been the greatest of hosts. Chef your meals were a phenomenon. Thank you both for a wonderful trip, wish it could have been longer! Going to miss you both!! Thank you so much for joining us and sharing your stories with us. You will truly be missed – till we meet again
Fantastic trip. A week with family, excellent food and "new friends". Captain thanks for the painkillers, the lessons on charters and ensigns. Chef, the meals were excellent, your attention to detail did not go unnoticed. We enjoyed our meals together and so happy you enjoyed playing cards, dice and coloring with the family. A vacation and 50th celebration we will always remember!
Thanks for a great week onboard! Highlights for this group included fun games for the kids, lounging and jumping of the champagne deck, tubing and paddle board surfing, teenage dinghy driving, the "miracle" of the watermaker and of course the daily institution of captains cocktail hour. That said, the crew are the reason our vacation was truly special. They are a seamless team, radiating intelligence, warmth and charm on a daily basis. They attended to our every need, even before we knew we "needed" it. They guided us to stunning anchorages and wonderful snorkeling/dive sites. The chef’s meals were each an event; delicious, creative and beautifully presented. We could write MUCH more, but there is no need to add to perfection! We will definitely sail again!
