What Are The Different Types of Yachts Available For Charter?

There are many different types of yacht on the market for charter. Here are some of the main ones

A sailing catamaran is one of the most popular choices for a crewed yacht charter. The yacht is made up of 2 hulls of equal size, which are connected by a bridge or deck. The design provides several advantages over traditional sailing boats, including increased stability and larger living space.

The dual hull allows for a shallower draft, which means that they are ideal for anchoring in shallow water closer to the shore.

Available for charter are catamarans from 45ft up to 80ft. Most can accommodate up to 8 guests with some that can accommodate up to 10 or even 12 guests. All will have a Captain and a Chef, with larger catamarans having additional crew such as a stewardess and deckhand.

The speed in which a sailing catamaran can travel is based on its size, but anywhere between 5 – 8 knots when sailing and 7 – 10 knots when using the engines.

Prices start at around $24,000 for a week and go up to $100,000 and above. The price will depend on the size, the year the boat was built, the number of crew, and the amenities onboard. Some of the larger catamarans have jacuzzis and jet skis onboard (jet skis are illegal in the BVI).

Power Catamarans are becoming increasingly popular and we see more and more arrive in the Caribbean and Mediterranean each season.

This may seem obvious, but power catamarans are similar to the sailing catamarans but without the sails!

Power catamarans will get you to places faster, although in the BVI speed is not so necessary as the islands are close together. For instance, in Greece, a power catamaran may be more suitable if you wanted to get to further away islands within a week-long charter.

Power catamarans are capable of speeds between 10 -17 knots depending on the size of the yacht and the engines.

Prices start at around $38,000 all inclusive for a week and go up to $100,000 and above. The price will depend on the size, the year the boat was built, the number of crew, and the amenities onboard. Some of the larger catamarans have jacuzzis!

A motor yacht is the way to go for those seeking the ultimate luxury and comfort. High powered engines will get you to places fast. These vessels are designed with luxury cruising and can differ in size, design, and onboard amenities.

  • Luxurious, well-appointed, spacious cabins
  • Large living areas with panoramic windows, luxury seating and entertainment systems.
  • Formal and informal dining spaces
  • Expansive outdoor areas and lounges, sunbeds, dining tables
  • Larger motor yachts will feature hot tubs and swimming pools.
  • Water toys may include jet skis (not legal in BVI)
  • Gym or workout areas equipped with exercise machines
  • Spas and massage rooms.
  • Cocktail bars
  • Some very large motor yachts may have a heli pad
These amenities can vary widely depending on the yacht’s size

The larger motor yachts have decks on many levels, spacious cabins, and multiple crew to take care of your every need.

Smaller motor yachts of about 80ft will start at $65,000 plus expenses. Larger yachts of 135ft will be $140,000 plus expenses.  The sky is the limit depending on what you desire.

South Motor Yacht

As the name suggests, a motorsailer is a type of motor yacht that has sails, should you wish to sail. These yachts are found in the Mediterranean.

They are a great platform for a large family or group. Most can take 12 guests but some are able to accommodate up to over 30, making it the ideal vessel for a multigenerational family trip or a reunion.

These yachts come with beautiful sundecks with a bar and lounging areas and most have a jacuzzi to relax in. The vast space is a great place to gather and take in the 360 views across the water to the amazing islands.

These vessels will mostly motor while island hopping, but the crew will put the sails up on occasion so you can listen to the wind in the sails and the yacht gliding through the ocean.

Motorsailers start from €60,000 a week plus expenses.
