Understanding yacht charter payments is essential for planning your luxury vacation with confidence. Unlike traditional hotel bookings, yacht charters involve multiple payment components and a specific timeline that many first-time charterers find confusing. This comprehensive guide breaks down everything you need to know about charter fees, the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA), payment schedules, and what to expect during final accounting.
Whether you’re comparing all-inclusive versus plus-expenses charters or wondering if you’ll receive unused APA funds back, we’ll answer all your payment questions with the transparency you deserve.
Yes. On a well-appointed crewed yacht each stateroom has its own en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower stall, an electric flush toilet and a hairdryer. The cabins themselves are built for a week aboard, with large windows for natural light, blinds or shades for privacy, reading lights, electric fans, and drawers and a closet for storage. No. On a crewed charter you do not have to lift a finger. You are welcome to join in with the sailing or motoring if you would enjoy it, but there is no requirement to. Cooking is handled entirely by your trained private chef, and where there is additional crew aboard, they look after the cabins and run the watersports activities. A comfortable charter yacht covers three areas. Cabins should have en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers, electric flush toilets, hairdryers, individually controlled air conditioning, good natural light and proper storage. Living spaces should offer a spacious salon and a large dining area in the cockpit, with easy flow from inside to out. On deck, look for a flybridge or sky-lounge, shaded sun-beds, a barbecue grill, a fridge and icemaker, and a hot and cold shower on the stern. Because of the space and the ride. Catamarans have far more room to move around than a comparable monohull, and they are notably comfortable both underway and at anchor. Their layouts also vary quite a bit from yacht to yacht, especially on deck, which means you can choose one whose exterior spaces suit how your group likes to spend the day. Most Caribbean yacht charter activities include comprehensive water sports equipment: snorkeling gear, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, fishing equipment, and inflatable water toys. Premium yachts often feature sea scooters, water skis, wakeboards, and even SCUBA diving equipment with certified instructors. Yes. Crewed charter yachts are fully air conditioned, and each cabin has individual controls so you can set the temperature for your own comfort. Generators provide the power to run the air conditioning and every other system onboard when required, and some yachts also carry solar panels.
Questions to Ask Your Broker About Payments
Before signing your charter agreement, clarify:
- What is the exact APA percentage for my charter? (varies by yacht and destination)
- What payment methods do you accept? (fees for credit cards?)
- What’s included in the charter fee versus APA? (any gray areas?)
- Is this an all-inclusive or plus-expenses charter? (understand the model)
- What’s your recommended crew gratuity range? (based on similar charters)
- How quickly are APA refunds processed? (timeline expectations)
- What happens if APA runs out mid-charter? (procedures and payment options)
- Are there any additional fees or charges? (delivery fees, permits, special equipment)
- What currency is the charter priced in? (exchange rate considerations)
- Is travel insurance required or recommended? (cancellation and protection)
A transparent broker welcomes these questions and provides clear, detailed answers. This conversation ensures you understand all payment obligations before committing to your charter.
The Value of Transparency in Yacht Charter Payments
At Epic Yacht Charters, we believe payment transparency builds trust and enhances your charter experience. The APA system, while initially confusing to first-time charterers, actually provides remarkable clarity—you see exactly where every dollar goes. Unlike all-inclusive packages with hidden limitations or surprise charges, the plus-expenses model ensures you receive:
- Complete documentation of all expenditures
- Flexibility to customize your experience
- Refunds of unused funds
- Premium provisions and services when desired
- Honest accounting without hidden fees
When you work with an experienced broker (like us at Epic Yacht Charters) who explains the payment structure clearly, manages expectations about costs, and helps you budget appropriately, the charter payment process becomes straightforward and stress-free.
Budgeting for Your Yacht Charter
Understanding yacht charter payments empowers you to budget accurately and enjoy your vacation without financial surprises. Remember these key points:
- Charter fee covers the yacht, crew, and standard equipment
- APA (25-40% of charter fee) covers all variable operating expenses
- Payment timeline: 50% deposit at booking, balance and APA 8 weeks before charter
- Unused APA is refunded to you with complete accounting or can be used toward the crew gratuity
- Crew gratuity (15-20%) is paid separately based on service quality
- All-inclusive options exist but offer less flexibility than APA model
- Complete transparency should be standard from your broker
Your total charter investment typically equals: Charter Fee + APA + Gratuity, minus any APA refund. For a $40,000 charter, budget approximately $57,000-$60,000 for the complete experience. With proper planning and guidance from an experienced charter broker, the payment process becomes simple and transparent—allowing you to focus on what matters most: creating unforgettable memories on the water.

Plus Expenses or APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance)
The charter rate shown includes the use of the charter yacht, professional crew and onboard equipment.
All other daily expenses, that are not included in the base rate, will be covered with an Advanced Provisioning Payment (APA). This is collected before the charter commences.
APA expenses include fuel for both the yacht and tender, provisions, dockage, moorings, airport transfers, cruising permits and taxes, scuba diving and onshore excursions.
The APA payment is typically 20%-25% of the base charter rate for sailing yachts and 30%-35% for motor yachts. Your captain will purchase provisions, taxes, fuel etc for the charter using the APA and will keep all receipts along with a running log of expenses. This can be viewed at any time during your charter.
Any APA that has not been spent will be returned to you at the end of the charter. If during the charter, expenses exceed the APA, additional funds will need to be submitted. Your captain will update and advise you if any further payment is required. This will need to be paid before you disembark.
Crew Gratuity is separate and is typically 15%-20% of the charter rate. This should be given to your captain at the end of your charter.
